‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ (2023) Honest Movie Review
What is ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ Movie About?
Just hearing the name Judy Blume took me back to the grade school Scholastic Book Fairs. I remember waiting in line with my friends while discussing our book fair finds.
One of the best parts of the book fair was the moment you found something that made you feel like it was hand selected just for you. Watching this movie I had so many moments that made me feel like they must’ve added those lines or scenes specially for me.
The 2023 film adaptation of ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ is about an eleven year girl named Margaret Simon. She is from New York City, her paternal grandmother is one of her most favorite people, and she is practically counting the days until puberty hits.
Margaret’s father was raised Jewish, while her mother was raised in a Christian household. As Margaret begins sixth grade she starts researching both religions with the intent of choosing one that fits her best.
In “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” Rachel Mcadams plays Barbara Simons which is Margaret’s mom. If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t know this movie was even coming out. I hadn’t heard anything about it.
When I saw Rachel Mcadams and Kathy Bates (playing Margaret’s grandmother) are both in this movie, I knew I had to see it. These are two women that have yet to disappoint me in an acting role.
Is ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ Worth the Watch?
I’m personally a fan of movies based on books. But even if I were to put that point aside; I’d still recommend watching ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.’ Regardless of your religious beliefs, most people will find something to relate to in this movie.
When Nancy, Margaret, and their friends Gretchen and Janie make a pact to tell each other when they get their first period, the entire theater laughed out loud. There’s a scene with Judy practicing how to properly wear a ‘sanitary napkin’ then immediately lifting her knees and doing squats. There should be research on the feminine urge to test our mobility after wearing something new.
Do you remember the first time you had to buy pads yourself? Were you lucky enough to get a woman at checkout? No? Me either. Leave a comment about your experience realizing you started your period. Were you horrified, disgusted, or maybe just excited?
Let It Be a Lady
Overall, I’d say ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ movie is worth the watch. If you want a special day out with your daughter or niece, go watch this movie. It’s a feel good, coming of age movie with actors so talented you can’t help but to empathize with their situations.
